<title>tracing: Fix ftrace event field alignments</title>

The fields of ftrace specific events (events used to save ftrace internal
events like function traces and trace_printk) are generated similarly to
how normal trace event fields are generated. That is, the fields are added
to a trace_events_fields array that saves the name, offset, size,
alignment and signness of the field. It is used to produce the output in
the format file in tracefs so that tooling knows how to parse the binary
data of the trace events.

The issue is that some of the ftrace event structures are packed. The
function graph exit event structures are one of them. The 64 bit calltime
and rettime fields end up 4 byte aligned, but the algorithm to show to
userspace shows them as 8 byte aligned.

The macros that create the ftrace events has one for embedded structure
fields. There's two macros for theses fields:

  __field_desc() and __field_packed()

The difference of the latter macro is that it treats the field as packed.

Rename that field to __field_desc_packed() and create replace the
__field_packed() to be a normal field that is packed and have the calltime
and rettime use those.

This showed up on 32bit architectures for function graph time fields. It
had:

 ~# cat /sys/kernel/tracing/events/ftrace/funcgraph_exit/format

        field:unsigned int depth;       offset:12;      size:4; signed:0;
        field:unsigned int overrun;     offset:16;      size:4; signed:0;
        field:unsigned long long calltime;      offset:24;      size:8; signed:0;
        field:unsigned long long rettime;       offset:32;      size:8; signed:0;

Notice that overrun is at offset 16 with size 4, where in the structure
calltime is at offset 20 (16 + 4), but it shows the offset at 24. That's
because it used the alignment of unsigned long long when used as a
declaration and not as a member of a structure where it would be aligned
by word size (in this case 4).

By using the proper structure alignment, the format has it at the correct
offset:

<title>tracing: Allow synthetic events to pass around stacktraces</title>

Allow a stacktrace from one event to be displayed by the end event of a
synthetic event. This is very useful when looking for the longest latency
of a sleep or something blocked on I/O.

The following can crash the kernel:

 3. Open bash file descriptor 5 on the enable file of the kprobe event
 4. Delete the kprobe event (removes the files too)
 5. Close the bash file descriptor 5

The above causes a crash!

What happens here is that the kprobe event creates a trace_event_file
"file" descriptor that represents the file in tracefs to the event. It
maintains state of the event (is it enabled for the given instance?).
Opening the "enable" file gets a reference to the event "file" descriptor
via the open file descriptor. When the kprobe event is deleted, the file is
also deleted from the tracefs system which also frees the event "file"
descriptor.

But as the tracefs file is still opened by user space, it will not be
totally removed until the final dput() is called on it. But this is not
true with the event "file" descriptor that is already freed. If the user
does a write to or simply closes the file descriptor it will reference the
event "file" descriptor that was just freed, causing a use-after-free bug.

To solve this, add a ref count to the event "file" descriptor as well as a
new flag called "FREED". The "file" will not be freed until the last
reference is released. But the FREE flag will be set when the event is
removed to prevent any more modifications to that event from happening,
even if there's still a reference to the event "file" descriptor.

What happens here is that the kprobe event creates a trace_event_file
"file" descriptor that represents the file in tracefs to the event. It
maintains state of the event (is it enabled for the given instance?).
Opening the "enable" file gets a reference to the event "file" descriptor
via the open file descriptor. When the kprobe event is deleted, the file is
also deleted from the tracefs system which also frees the event "file"
descriptor.

But as the tracefs file is still opened by user space, it will not be
totally removed until the final dput() is called on it. But this is not
true with the event "file" descriptor that is already freed. If the user
does a write to or simply closes the file descriptor it will reference the
event "file" descriptor that was just freed, causing a use-after-free bug.

To solve this, add a ref count to the event "file" descriptor as well as a
new flag called "FREED". The "file" will not be freed until the last
reference is released. But the FREE flag will be set when the event is
removed to prevent any more modifications to that event from happening,
even if there's still a reference to the event "file" descriptor.

When the trace event enable and filter files are opened, increment the
trace array ref counter, otherwise they can be accessed when the trace
array is being deleted. The ref counter keeps the trace array from being
deleted while those files are opened.

There is race issue when concurrently splice_read main trace_pipe and
per_cpu trace_pipes which will result in data read out being different
from what actually writen.

As suggested by Steven:
  &gt; I believe we should add a ref count to trace_pipe and the per_cpu
  &gt; trace_pipes, where if they are opened, nothing else can read it.
  &gt;
  &gt; Opening trace_pipe locks all per_cpu ref counts, if any of them are
  &gt; open, then the trace_pipe open will fail (and releases any ref counts

To help debugging kernel, show real address for trace event arguments
in tracefs/trace{,pipe} instead of hashed pointer value.

Since ftrace human-readable format uses vsprintf(), all %p are
translated to hash values instead of pointer address.

However, when debugging the kernel, raw address value gives a
hint when comparing with the memory mapping in the kernel.
(Those are sometimes used with crash log, which is not hashed too)
So converting %p with %px when calling trace_seq_printf().

Moreover, this is not improving the security because the tracefs
can be used only by root user and the raw address values are readable
from tracefs/percpu/cpu*/trace_pipe_raw file.

Currently the tracing_reset_all_online_cpus() requires the
trace_types_lock held. But only one caller of this function actually has
that lock held before calling it, and the other just takes the lock so
that it can call it. More users of this function is needed where the lock
is not held.

Add a tracing_reset_all_online_cpus_unlocked() function for the one use
case that calls it without being held, and also add a lockdep_assert to
make sure it is held when called.

Then have tracing_reset_all_online_cpus() take the lock internally, such
that callers do not need to worry about taking it.

Currently trace_printk() can be used as soon as early_trace_init() is
called from start_kernel(). But if a crash happens, and
"ftrace_dump_on_oops" is set on the kernel command line, all you get will
be:

This is because the trace_printk() event (type 6) hasn't been registered
yet. That gets done via an early_initcall(), which may be early, but not
early enough.

Instead of registering the trace_printk() event (and other ftrace events,
which are not trace events) via an early_initcall(), have them registered at
the same time that trace_printk() can be used. This way, if there is a
crash before early_initcall(), then the trace_printk()s will actually be
useful.

If a event is filtered by pid and a trigger that requires processing of
the event to happen is a attached to the event, the discard portion does
not take the pid filtering into account, and the event will then be
recorded when it should not have been.
