2022-01-22fs: proc: store PDE()->data into inode->i_privateMuchun Song3-11/+1
PDE_DATA(inode) is introduced to get user private data and hide the layout of struct proc_dir_entry. The inode->i_private is used to do the same thing as well. Save a copy of user private data to inode-> i_private when proc inode is allocated. This means the user also can get their private data by inode->i_private. Introduce pde_data() to wrap inode->i_private so that we can remove PDE_DATA() from fs/proc/generic.c and make PTE_DATE() as a wrapper of pde_data(). It will be easier if we decide to remove PDE_DATE() in the future. 2022-01-22sysctl: add and use base directory declarer and registration helperLuis Chamberlain1-0/+9
Patch series "sysctl: add and use base directory declarer and registration helper". In this patch series we start addressing base directories, and so we start with the "fs" sysctls. The end goal is we end up completely moving all "fs" sysctl knobs out from kernel/sysctl. This patch (of 6): Add a set of helpers which can be used to declare and register base directory sysctls on their own. We do this so we can later move each of the base sysctl directories like "fs", "kernel", etc, to their own respective files instead of shoving the declarations and registrations all on kernel/sysctl.c. The lazy approach has caught up and with this, we just end up extending the list of base directories / sysctls on one file and this makes maintenance difficult due to merge conflicts from many developers. The declarations are used first by kernel/sysctl.c for registration its own base which over time we'll try to clean up. It will be used in the next patch to demonstrate how to cleanly deal with base sysctl directories. 2022-01-22sysctl: move some boundary constants from sysctl.c to sysctl_valsXiaoming Ni1-1/+1
sysctl has helpers which let us specify boundary values for a min or max int value. Since these are used for a boundary check only they don't change, so move these variables to sysctl_vals to avoid adding duplicate variables. This will help with our cleanup of kernel/sysctl.c. 2022-01-22sysctl: add a new register_sysctl_init() interfaceXiaoming Ni1-0/+33
Patch series "sysctl: first set of kernel/sysctl cleanups", v2. Finally had time to respin the series of the work we had started last year on cleaning up the kernel/sysct.c kitchen sink. People keeps stuffing their sysctls in that file and this creates a maintenance burden. So this effort is aimed at placing sysctls where they actually belong. I'm going to split patches up into series as there is quite a bit of work. This first set adds register_sysctl_init() for uses of registerting a sysctl on the init path, adds const where missing to a few places, generalizes common values so to be more easy to share, and starts the move of a few kernel/sysctl.c out where they belong. The majority of rework on v2 in this first patch set is 0-day fixes. Eric Biederman's feedback is later addressed in subsequent patch sets. I'll only post the first two patch sets for now. We can address the rest once the first two patch sets get completely reviewed / Acked. This patch (of 9): The kernel/sysctl.c is a kitchen sink where everyone leaves their dirty dishes, this makes it very difficult to maintain. To help with this maintenance let's start by moving sysctls to places where they actually belong. The proc sysctl maintainers do not want to know what sysctl knobs you wish to add for your own piece of code, we just care about the core logic. Today though folks heavily rely on tables on kernel/sysctl.c so they can easily just extend this table with their needed sysctls. In order to help users move their sysctls out we need to provide a helper which can be used during code initialization. We special-case the initialization use of register_sysctl() since it *is* safe to fail, given all that sysctls do is provide a dynamic interface to query or modify at runtime an existing variable. So the use case of register_sysctl() on init should *not* stop if the sysctls don't end up getting registered. It would be counter productive to stop boot if a simple sysctl registration failed. Provide a helper for init then, and document the recommended init levels to use for callers of this routine. We will later use this in subsequent patches to start slimming down kernel/sysctl.c tables and moving sysctl registration to the code which actually needs these sysctls. 2022-01-20kthread: dynamically allocate memory to store kthread's full nameYafang Shao1-0/+3
When I was implementing a new per-cpu kthread cfs_migration, I found the comm of it "cfs_migration/%u" is truncated due to the limitation of TASK_COMM_LEN. For example, the comm of the percpu thread on CPU10~19 all have the same name "cfs_migration/1", which will confuse the user. This issue is not critical, because we can get the corresponding CPU from the task's Cpus_allowed. But for kthreads corresponding to other hardware devices, it is not easy to get the detailed device info from task comm, for example, jbd2/nvme0n1p2- xfs-reclaim/sdf Currently there are so many truncated kthreads: rcu_tasks_kthre rcu_tasks_rude_ rcu_tasks_trace poll_mpt3sas0_s ext4-rsv-conver xfs-reclaim/sd{a, b, c, ...} xfs-blockgc/sd{a, b, c, ...} xfs-inodegc/sd{a, b, c, ...} audit_send_repl ecryptfs-kthrea vfio-irqfd-clea jbd2/nvme0n1p2- ... We can shorten these names to work around this problem, but it may be not applied to all of the truncated kthreads. Take 'jbd2/nvme0n1p2-' for example, it is a nice name, and it is not a good idea to shorten it. One possible way to fix this issue is extending the task comm size, but as task->comm is used in lots of places, that may cause some potential buffer overflows. Another more conservative approach is introducing a new pointer to store kthread's full name if it is truncated, which won't introduce too much overhead as it is in the non-critical path. Finally we make a dicision to use the second approach. 2022-01-20proc/vmcore: don't fake reading zeroes on surprise vmcore_cb unregistrationDavid Hildenbrand1-8/+2
In commit cc5f2704c934 ("proc/vmcore: convert oldmem_pfn_is_ram callback to more generic vmcore callbacks"), we added detection of surprise vmcore_cb unregistration after the vmcore was already opened. Once detected, we warn the user and simulate reading zeroes from that point on when accessing the vmcore. The basic reason was that unexpected unregistration, for example, by manually unbinding a driver from a device after opening the vmcore, is not supported and could result in reading oldmem the vmcore_cb would have actually prohibited while registered. However, something like that can similarly be trigger by a user that's really looking for trouble simply by unbinding the relevant driver before opening the vmcore -- or by disallowing loading the driver in the first place. So it's actually of limited help. Currently, unregistration can only be triggered via virtio-mem when manually unbinding the driver from the device inside the VM; there is no way to trigger it from the hypervisor, as hypervisors don't allow for unplugging virtio-mem devices -- ripping out system RAM from a VM without coordination with the guest is usually not a good idea. The important part is that unbinding the driver and unregistering the vmcore_cb while concurrently reading the vmcore won't crash the system, and that is handled by the rwsem. To make the mechanism more future proof, let's remove the "read zero" part, but leave the warning in place. For example, we could have a future driver (like virtio-balloon) that will contact the hypervisor to figure out if we already populated a page for a given PFN. Hotunplugging such a device and consequently unregistering the vmcore_cb could be triggered from the hypervisor without harming the system even while kdump is running. In that case, we don't want to silently end up with a vmcore that contains wrong data, because the user inside the VM might be unaware of the hypervisor action and might easily miss the warning in the log. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. 2022-01-15mm: add a field to store names for private anonymous memoryColin Cross1-1/+11
In many userspace applications, and especially in VM based applications like Android uses heavily, there are multiple different allocators in use. At a minimum there is libc malloc and the stack, and in many cases there are libc malloc, the stack, direct syscalls to mmap anonymous memory, and multiple VM heaps (one for small objects, one for big objects, etc.). Each of these layers usually has its own tools to inspect its usage; malloc by compiling a debug version, the VM through heap inspection tools, and for direct syscalls there is usually no way to track them. On Android we heavily use a set of tools that use an extended version of the logic covered in Documentation/vm/pagemap.txt to walk all pages mapped in userspace and slice their usage by process, shared (COW) vs. unique mappings, backing, etc. This can account for real physical memory usage even in cases like fork without exec (which Android uses heavily to share as many private COW pages as possible between processes), Kernel SamePage Merging, and clean zero pages. It produces a measurement of the pages that only exist in that process (USS, for unique), and a measurement of the physical memory usage of that process with the cost of shared pages being evenly split between processes that share them (PSS). If all anonymous memory is indistinguishable then figuring out the real physical memory usage (PSS) of each heap requires either a pagemap walking tool that can understand the heap debugging of every layer, or for every layer's heap debugging tools to implement the pagemap walking logic, in which case it is hard to get a consistent view of memory across the whole system. Tracking the information in userspace leads to all sorts of problems. It either needs to be stored inside the process, which means every process has to have an API to export its current heap information upon request, or it has to be stored externally in a filesystem that somebody needs to clean up on crashes. It needs to be readable while the process is still running, so it has to have some sort of synchronization with every layer of userspace. Efficiently tracking the ranges requires reimplementing something like the kernel vma trees, and linking to it from every layer of userspace. It requires more memory, more syscalls, more runtime cost, and more complexity to separately track regions that the kernel is already tracking. This patch adds a field to /proc/pid/maps and /proc/pid/smaps to show a userspace-provided name for anonymous vmas. The names of named anonymous vmas are shown in /proc/pid/maps and /proc/pid/smaps as [anon:<name>]. Userspace can set the name for a region of memory by calling prctl(PR_SET_VMA, PR_SET_VMA_ANON_NAME, start, len, (unsigned long)name) Setting the name to NULL clears it. The name length limit is 80 bytes including NUL-terminator and is checked to contain only printable ascii characters (including space), except '[',']','\','$' and '`'. Ascii strings are being used to have a descriptive identifiers for vmas, which can be understood by the users reading /proc/pid/maps or /proc/pid/smaps. Names can be standardized for a given system and they can include some variable parts such as the name of the allocator or a library, tid of the thread using it, etc. The name is stored in a pointer in the shared union in vm_area_struct that points to a null terminated string. Anonymous vmas with the same name (equivalent strings) and are otherwise mergeable will be merged. The name pointers are not shared between vmas even if they contain the same name. The name pointer is stored in a union with fields that are only used on file-backed mappings, so it does not increase memory usage. CONFIG_ANON_VMA_NAME kernel configuration is introduced to enable this feature. It keeps the feature disabled by default to prevent any additional memory overhead and to avoid confusing procfs parsers on systems which are not ready to support named anonymous vmas. The patch is based on the original patch developed by Colin Cross, more specifically on its latest version [1] posted upstream by Sumit Semwal. It used a userspace pointer to store vma names. In that design, name pointers could be shared between vmas. However during the last upstreaming attempt, Kees Cook raised concerns [2] about this approach and suggested to copy the name into kernel memory space, perform validity checks [3] and store as a string referenced from vm_area_struct. One big concern is about fork() performance which would need to strdup anonymous vma names. Dave Hansen suggested experimenting with worst-case scenario of forking a process with 64k vmas having longest possible names [4]. I ran this experiment on an ARM64 Android device and recorded a worst-case regression of almost 40% when forking such a process. This regression is addressed in the followup patch which replaces the pointer to a name with a refcounted structure that allows sharing the name pointer between vmas of the same name. Instead of duplicating the string during fork() or when splitting a vma it increments the refcount. 2021-11-09proc: allow pid_revalidate() during LOOKUP_RCUStephen Brennan1-8/+10
Problem Description: When running running ~128 parallel instances of TZ=/etc/localtime ps -fe >/dev/null on a 128CPU machine, the %sys utilization reaches 97%, and perf shows the following code path as being responsible for heavy contention on the d_lockref spinlock: walk_component() lookup_fast() d_revalidate() pid_revalidate() // returns -ECHILD unlazy_child() lockref_get_not_dead(&nd->path.dentry->d_lockref) <-- contention The reason is that pid_revalidate() is triggering a drop from RCU to ref path walk mode. All concurrent path lookups thus try to grab a reference to the dentry for /proc/, before re-executing pid_revalidate() and then stepping into the /proc/$pid directory. Thus there is huge spinlock contention. This patch allows pid_revalidate() to execute in RCU mode, meaning that the path lookup can successfully enter the /proc/$pid directory while still in RCU mode. Later on, the path lookup may still drop into ref mode, but the contention will be much reduced at this point. By applying this patch, %sys utilization falls to around 85% under the same workload, and the number of ps processes executed per unit time increases by 3x-4x. Although this particular workload is a bit contrived, we have seen some large collections of eager monitoring scripts which produced similarly high %sys time due to contention in the /proc directory. As a result this patch, Al noted that several procfs methods which were only called in ref-walk mode could now be called from RCU mode. To ensure that this patch is safe, I audited all the inode get_link and permission() implementations, as well as dentry d_revalidate() implementations, in fs/proc. The purpose here is to ensure that they either are safe to call in RCU (i.e. don't sleep) or correctly bail out of RCU mode if they don't support it. My analysis shows that all at-risk procfs methods are safe to call under RCU, and thus this patch is safe. Procfs RCU-walk Analysis: This analysis is up-to-date with 5.15-rc3. When called under RCU mode, these functions have arguments as follows: * get_link() receives a NULL dentry pointer when called in RCU mode. * permission() receives MAY_NOT_BLOCK in the mode parameter when called from RCU. * d_revalidate() receives LOOKUP_RCU in flags. For the following functions, either they are trivially RCU safe, or they explicitly bail at the beginning of the function when they run: proc_ns_get_link (bails out) proc_get_link (RCU safe) proc_pid_get_link (bails out) map_files_d_revalidate (bails out) map_misc_d_revalidate (bails out) proc_net_d_revalidate (RCU safe) proc_sys_revalidate (bails out, also not under /proc/$pid) tid_fd_revalidate (bails out) proc_sys_permission (not under /proc/$pid) The remainder of the functions require a bit more detail: * proc_fd_permissio
