On x86-32 the idt_table with 256 entries needs only 2048 bytes. It is
page-aligned, but the end of the .bss..page_aligned section is not
guaranteed to be page-aligned.
As a result, objects from other .bss sections may end up on the same 4k
page as the idt_table, and will accidentially get mapped read-only during
boot, causing unexpected page-faults when the kernel writes to them.
This could be worked around by making the objects in the page aligned
sections page sized, but that's wrong.
Explicit sections which store only page aligned objects have an implicit
guarantee that the object is alone in the page in which it is placed. That
works for all objects except the last one. That's inconsistent.
Enforcing page sized objects for these sections would wreckage memory
sanitizers, because the object becomes artificially larger than it should
be and out of bound access becomes legit.
Align the end of the .bss..page_aligned and .data..page_aligned section on
page-size so all objects places in these sections are guaranteed to have
their own page.

Commit d66acc39c7ce ("bitops: Optimise get_order()") introduced a
compilation warning because "rx_frag_size" is an "ushort" while
PAGE_SHIFT here is 16.
The commit changed the get_order() to be a multi-line macro where
compilers insist to check all statements in the macro even when
__builtin_constant_p(rx_frag_size) will return false as "rx_frag_size"
is a module parameter.

Looking at functions with large stack frames across all architectures
led me discovering that BUG() suffers from the same problem as
fortify_panic(), which I've added a workaround for already.
In short, variables that go out of scope by calling a noreturn function
or __builtin_unreachable() keep using stack space in functions
afterwards.
A workaround that was identified is to insert an empty assembler
statement just before calling the function that doesn't return. I'm
adding a macro "barrier_before_unreachable()" to document this, and
insert calls to that in all instances of BUG() that currently suffer
from this problem.
The files that saw the largest change from this had these frame sizes
before, and much less with my patch:

In case of ARC and CRIS, it turns out that the BUG() implementation
actually does return (or at least the compiler thinks it does),
resulting in lots of warnings about uninitialized variable use and
leaving noreturn functions, such as:

fortify_panic() as well, but that had very little effect, so I'm not
submitting that patch.

This commit is not required upstream, but is required for the 4.9.y
stable series.
Upstream commit 101110f6271c ("Kbuild: always define endianess in
kconfig.h") ensures that either __LITTLE_ENDIAN or __BIG_ENDIAN is
defined to reflect the endianness of the target CPU architecture
regardless of whether or not <asm/byteorder.h> has been #included. The
upstream definition of 'struct qspinlock' relies on this property.
Unfortunately, the 4.9.y stable series does not provide this guarantee,
so the 'spin_unlock()' routine can erroneously treat the underlying
lockword as big-endian on little-endian architectures using native
qspinlock (i.e. x86_64 without PV) if the caller has not included
<asm/byteorder.h>. This can lead to hangs such as the one in
'i915_gem_request()' reported via bugzilla:

Fix the issue by ensuring that <asm/byteorder.h> is #included in
<asm/qspinlock_types.h>, where 'struct qspinlock' is defined.

'struct __qspinlock' provides a handy union of fields so that
subcomponents of the lockword can be accessed by name, without having to
manage shifts and masks explicitly and take endianness into account.
This is useful in qspinlock.h and also potentially in arch headers, so
move the 'struct __qspinlock' into 'struct qspinlock' and kill the extra
definition.

The following kernel panic was observed on ARM64 platform due to a stale
TLB entry.
1. ioremap with 4K size, a valid pte page table is set.
2. iounmap it, its pte entry is set to 0.
3. ioremap the same address with 2M size, update its pmd entry with
a new value.
4. CPU may hit an exception because the old pmd entry is still in TLB,
which leads to a kernel panic.
Commit b6bdb7517c3d ("mm/vmalloc: add interfaces to free unmapped page
table") has addressed this panic by falling to pte mappings in the above
case on ARM64.
To support pmd mappings in all cases, TLB purge needs to be performed
in this case on ARM64.
Add a new arg, 'addr', to pud_free_pmd_page() and pmd_free_pte_page()
so that TLB purge can be added later in seprate patches.

For L1TF PROT_NONE mappings are protected by inverting the PFN in the page
table entry. This sets the high bits in the CPU's address space, thus
making sure to point to not point an unmapped entry to valid cached memory.
Some server system BIOSes put the MMIO mappings high up in the physical
address space. If such an high mapping was mapped to unprivileged users
they could attack low memory by setting such a mapping to PROT_NONE. This
could happen through a special device driver which is not access
protected. Normal /dev/mem is of course access protected.
To avoid this forbid PROT_NONE mappings or mprotect for high MMIO mappings.
Valid page mappings are allowed because the system is then unsafe anyways.
It's not expected that users commonly use PROT_NONE on MMIO. But to
minimize any impact this is only enforced if the mapping actually refers to
a high MMIO address (defined as the MAX_PA-1 bit being set), and also skip
the check for root.
For mmaps this is straight forward and can be handled in vm_insert_pfn and
in remap_pfn_range().
For mprotect it's a bit trickier. At the point where the actual PTEs are
accessed a lot of state has been changed and it would be difficult to undo
on an error. Since this is a uncommon case use a separate early page talk
walk pass for MMIO PROT_NONE mappings that checks for this condition
early. For non MMIO and non PROT_NONE there are no changes.

Patch series "Do not lose dirty bit on THP pages", v4.
Vlastimil noted that pmdp_invalidate() is not atomic and we can lose
dirty and access bits if CPU sets them after pmdp dereference, but
before set_pmd_at().
The bug can lead to data loss, but the race window is tiny and I haven't
seen any reports that suggested that it happens in reality. So I don't
think it worth sending it to stable.
Unfortunately, there's no way to address the issue in a generic way. We
need to fix all architectures that support THP one-by-one.
All architectures that have THP supported have to provide atomic
pmdp_invalidate() that returns previous value.
If generic implementation of pmdp_invalidate() is used, architecture
needs to provide atomic pmdp_estabish().
pmdp_estabish() is not used out-side generic implementation of
pmdp_invalidate() so far, but I think this can change in the future.

This is an implementation of pmdp_establish() that is only suitable for
an architecture that doesn't have hardware dirty/accessed bits. In this
case we can't race with CPU which sets these bits and non-atomic
approach is fine.

There is code duplicated over all architecture's headers for
futex_atomic_op_inuser. Namely op decoding, access_ok check for uaddr,
and comparison of the result.
Remove this duplication and leave up to the arches only the needed
assembly which is now in arch_futex_atomic_op_inuser.
This effectively distributes the Will Deacon's arm64 fix for undefined
behaviour reported by UBSAN to all architectures. The fix was done in
commit 5f16a046f8e1 (arm64: futex: Fix undefined behaviour with
FUTEX_OP_OPARG_SHIFT usage). Look there for an example dump.
And as suggested by Thomas, check for negative oparg too, because it was
also reported to cause undefined behaviour report.
Note that s390 removed access_ok check in d12a29703 ("s390/uaccess:
remove pointless access_ok() checks") as access_ok there returns true.
We introduce it back to the helper for the sake of simplicity (it gets
optimized away anyway).

Commit 99492c39f39f ("earlycon: Fix __earlycon_table stride") tried to fix
__earlycon_table stride by forcing the earlycon_id struct alignment to 32
and asking the linker to 32-byte align the __earlycon_table symbol. This
fix was based on commit 07fca0e57fca92 ("tracing: Properly align linker
defined symbols") which tried a similar fix for the tracing subsystem.
However, this fix doesn't quite work because there is no guarantee that
gcc will place structures packed into an array format. In fact, gcc 4.9
chooses to 64-byte align these structs by inserting additional padding
between the entries because it has no clue that they are supposed to be in
an array. If we are unlucky, the linker will assign symbol
"__earlycon_table" to a 32-byte aligned address which does not correspond
to the 64-byte aligned contents of section "__earlycon_table".
To address this same problem, the fix to the tracing system was
subsequently re-implemented using a more robust table of pointers approach
by commits:

e4a9ea5ee7c8 ("tracing: Replace trace_event struct array with pointer array")
Let's use this same "array of pointers to structs" approach for

On architectures with CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_HUGE_VMAP set, ioremap() may
create pud/pmd mappings. A kernel panic was observed on arm64 systems
with Cortex-A75 in the following steps as described by Hanjun Guo.
1. ioremap a 4K size, valid page table will build,
2. iounmap it, pte0 will set to 0;
3. ioremap the same address with 2M size, pgd/pmd is unchanged,
then set the a new value for pmd;
4. pte0 is leaked;
5. CPU may meet exception because the old pmd is still in TLB,
which will lead to kernel panic.
This panic is not reproducible on x86. INVLPG, called from iounmap,
purges all levels of entries associated with purged address on x86. x86
still has memory leak.
The patch changes the ioremap path to free unmapped page table(s) since
doing so in the unmap path has the following issues:
- The iounmap() path is shared with vunmap(). Since vmap() only
supports pte mappings, making vunmap() to free a pte page is an
overhead for regular vmap users as they do not need a pte page freed
up.
- Checking if all entries in a pte page are cleared in the unmap path
is racy, and serializing this check is expensive.
- The unmap path calls free_vmap_area_noflush() to do lazy TLB purges.
Clearing a pud/pmd entry before the lazy TLB purges needs extra TLB
purge.
Add two interfaces, pud_free_pmd_page() and pmd_free_pte_page(), which
clear a given pud/pmd entry and free up a page for the lower level
entries.
This patch implements their stub functions on x86 and arm64, which work
as workaround.

While trying to get our gold link to work, four cleanups:
matched the gdt_page declaration to its definition;
in fiddling unsuccessfully with PERCPU_INPUT(), lined up backslashes;
lined up the backslashes according to convention in percpu-defs.h;
deleted the unused irq_stack_pointer addition to irq_stack_union.
Sad to report that aligning backslashes does not appear to help gold
align to 8192: but while these did not help, they are worth keeping.

After several recent works [1,2,3] KASLR on x86_64 was basically
considered dead by many researchers. We have been working on an
efficient but effective fix for this problem and found that not mapping
the kernel space when running in user mode is the solution to this
problem [4] (the corresponding paper [5] will be presented at ESSoS17).
With this RFC patch we allow anybody to configure their kernel with the
flag CONFIG_KAISER to add our defense mechanism.
If there are any questions we would love to answer them.

As raw_cpu_generic_read() is a plain read from a raw_cpu_ptr() address,
it's possible (albeit unlikely) that the compiler will split the access
across multiple instructions.
In this_cpu_generic_read() we disable preemption but not interrupts
before calling raw_cpu_generic_read(). Thus, an interrupt could be taken
in the middle of the split load instructions. If a this_cpu_write() or
RMW this_cpu_*() op is made to the same variable in the interrupt
handling path, this_cpu_read() will return a torn value.
For native word types, we can avoid tearing using READ_ONCE(), but this
won't work in all cases (e.g. 64-bit types on most 32-bit platforms).
This patch reworks this_cpu_generic_read() to use READ_ONCE() where
possible, otherwise falling back to disabling interrupts.

When !NUMA, cpumask_of_node(@node) equals cpu_online_mask regardless of
@node. The assumption seems that if !NUMA, there shouldn't be more than
one node and thus reporting cpu_online_mask regardless of @node is
correct. However, that assumption was broken years ago to support
DISCONTIGMEM and whether a system has multiple nodes or not is
separately controlled by NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES.
This means that, on a system with !NUMA && NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES,
cpumask_of_node() will report cpu_online_mask for all possible nodes,
indicating that the CPUs are associated with multiple nodes which is an
impossible configuration.
This bug has been around forever but doesn't look like it has caused any
noticeable symptoms. However, it triggers a WARN recently added to
workqueue to verify NUMA affinity configuration.
Fix it by reporting empty cpumask on non-zero nodes if !NUMA.

LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION is configured
commit cb87481ee89dbd6609e227afbf64900fb4e5c930 upstream.
The .data and .bss sections were modified in the generic linker script to
pull in sections named .data.<C identifier>, which are generated by gcc with
-ffunction-sections and -fdata-sections options.
The problem with this pattern is it can also match section names that Linux
defines explicitly, e.g., .data.unlikely. This can cause Linux sections to
get moved into the wrong place.
The way to avoid this is to use ".." separators for explicit section names
(the dot character is valid in a section name but not a C identifier).
However currently there are sections which don't follow this rule, so for
now just disable the wild card by default.

The asm-prototypes.h file is used to provide dummy function declarations
for genksyms, when processing asm files with EXPORT_SYMBOL. Make sure
that any architecture defines get out of our way. x86 currently has an
issue with memcpy on 64bit with CONFIG_KMEMCHECK=y and with
memset/__memset on 32bit:

Commit 4efca4ed ("kbuild: modversions for EXPORT_SYMBOL() for asm") adds
modversion support for symbols exported from asm files. Architectures
must include C-style declarations for those symbols in asm/asm-prototypes.h
in order for them to be versioned.
Add these declarations for x86, and an architecture-independent file that
can be used for common symbols.
With f27c2f6 reverting 8ab2ae6 ("default exported asm symbols to zero") we
produce a scary warning on x86, this commit fixes that.

I loved that commit because of how it explained what the problem with
newer versions of binutils were, but the actual patch itself turns out
to not work very well.
It has two problems:
- a zero CRC value isn't actually right. It happens to work for the
case where both sides of the equation fail at giving the symbol a
crc, but there are cases where the users of the exported symbol get
the right crc (due to seeing the C declarations), but the actual
exporting itself does not (due to the whole weak asm symbol issue).
So then the module load fails after all - we did have a crc for the
symbol, but we couldn't match it with the loaded module.
- it seems that the alpha assembler has special semantics for the
'.set' directive, and on alpha it doesn't actually set the value of
the specified symbol at all, it is instead used to set various
assembly modes (eg ".set noat" and ".set noreorder").
So using ".set" to set the symbol value would just cause build
failures on alpha.
I'm sure we'll find some other workaround for these issues (hopefully
that involves getting rid of modversions entirely some day, but people
are also talking about just using smarter tools). But for now we'll
just fall back on commit faaae2a58143 ("Re-enable CONFIG_MODVERSIONS in
a slightly weaker form") that just let's a missing crc through.

With binutils-2.26 and before, a weak missing symbol was kept during the
final link, and a missing CRC for an export would lead to that CRC being
treated as zero implicitly. With binutils-2.27, the crc symbol gets
dropped, and any module trying to use it will fail to load.
This sets the weak CRC symbol to zero explicitly, making it defined in
vmlinux, which in turn lets us load the modules referring to that CRC.
The comment above the __CRC_SYMBOL macro suggests that this was always
the intention, although it also seems that all symbols defined in C have
a correct CRC these days, and only the exports that are now done in
assembly need this.

Limit the number of kmemleak false positives by including
.data.ro_after_init in memory scanning. To achieve this we need to add
symbols for start and end of the section to the linker scripts.
The problem was been uncovered by commit 56989f6d8568 ("genetlink: mark
families as __ro_after_init").

Commit 345ddcc882d8 ("ftrace: Have set_ftrace_pid use the bitmap like
events do") added a couple of this_cpu_read calls to the ftrace code.
On x86 this is not a problem, since it has single instructions to read
percpu data. Other architectures which use the generic variant now
have additional preempt_disable and preempt_enable calls in the core
ftrace code. This may lead to recursive calls and in result to a dead
machine, e.g. if preemption and debugging options are enabled.
To fix this use the notrace variant of preempt_disable and
preempt_enable within the generic percpu code.

The use of config_enabled() is ambiguous. For config options,
IS_ENABLED(), IS_REACHABLE(), etc. will make intention clearer.
Sometimes config_enabled() has been used for non-config options because
it is useful to check whether the given symbol is defined or not.
I have been tackling on deprecating config_enabled(), and now is the
time to finish this work.
Some new users have appeared for v4.9-rc1, but it is trivial to replace
them:
- arch/x86/mm/kaslr.c
replace config_enabled() with IS_ENABLED() because
CONFIG_X86_ESPFIX64 and CONFIG_EFI are boolean.
- include/asm-generic/export.h
replace config_enabled() with __is_defined().
Then, config_enabled() can be removed now.
Going forward, please use IS_ENABLED(), IS_REACHABLE(), etc. for config
options, and __is_defined() for non-config symbols.

Pull percpu updates from Tejun Heo:
- Nick improved generic implementations of percpu operations which
modify the variable and return so that they calculate the physical
address only once.
- percpu_ref percpu <-> atomic mode switching improvements. The
patchset was originally posted about a year ago but fell through the
crack.
- misc non-critical fixes.
