Since get_states() assumes the existence of libtraceevent, so move
to where it should belong, i.e, util/trace-event-parse.c, and also
rename it to parse_task_states().
Leave evsel_getstate() untouched as it fits well in the evsel
category.
Also make some necessary tweaks for python support, and get it
verified with: perf test python.

Perf uses a hard coded string "RSDTtXZPI" to index the sched_switch
prev_state field raw bitmask value. This works well except for when
the kernel changes this string, in which case this will break again.
Instead we add a new way to parse task state string from tracepoint
print format already recorded by perf, which eliminates the further
dependencies with this hardcode and unmaintainable macro, and this
is exactly what libtraceevent[1] does for now.
So we borrow the print flags parsing logic from libtraceevent[1].
And in get_states(), we walk the print arguments until the
__print_flags() for the target state field is found, and use that to
build the states string for future parsing.

When the "cycles" event isn't available evsel will fallback to the
"cpu-clock" software event.
"task-clock" is similar to "cpu-clock" but only runs when the process is
running.
Falling back to "cpu-clock" when not system wide leads to confusion, by
falling back to "task-clock" it is hoped the confusion is less.
Pass the target to determine if "task-clock" is more appropriate.
Update a nearby comment and debug string for the change.

Add a new branch filter, "counter", for the branch counter option. It is
used to mark the events which should be logged in the branch. If it is
applied with the -j option, the counters of all the events should be
logged in the branch. If the legacy kernel doesn't support the new
branch sample type, switching off the branch counter filter.
The stored counter values in each branch are displayed right after the
regular branch stack information via perf report -D.
Usage examples:
# perf record -e "{branch-instructions,branch-misses}:S" -j any,counter
Only the first event, branch-instructions, collect the LBR. Both
branch-instructions and branch-misses are marked as logged events. The
occurrences information of them can be found in the branch stack
extension space of each branch.
# perf record -e "{cpu/branch-instructions,branch_type=any/,cpu/branch-misses,branch_type=counter/}"
Only the first event, branch-instructions, collect the LBR. Only the
branch-misses event is marked as a logged event.

The macros PERF_REGS_MAX and PERF_REGS_MASK are architecture specific,
let's remove them from the common file util/perf_regs.c.
As a side effect, the weak functions arch__intr_reg_mask() and
arch__user_reg_mask() just return zeros, every arch defines its own
functions in the 'arch' folder for returning right values.
Note, we don't need to return intr/user register masks dynamically, this
is because these two functions are invoked during recording phase but
not decoding phase, they are always invoked on the native environment,
thus we don't need to parse them dynamically.

The current code uses macros PERF_REG_IP and PERF_REG_SP for parsing
registers and we build perf with these macros statically, which means it
only can correctly analyze CPU registers for the native architecture and
fails to support cross analysis (e.g. we build perf on x86 and cannot
analyze Arm64's registers).
We need to generalize util/perf_regs.c for support multi architectures,
as a first step, this commit introduces new functions perf_arch_reg_ip()
and perf_arch_reg_sp(), these two functions dynamically return IP and SP
register index respectively according to the parameter "arch".
Every architecture has its own functions (like __perf_reg_ip_arm64 and
__perf_reg_sp_arm64), these architecture specific functions are defined
in each arch source file under folder util/perf-regs-arch; at the end
all of them are built into the tool for cross analysis.
Committer notes:
Make DWARF_MINIMAL_REGS() an inline function, so that we can use the
__maybe_unused attribute for the 'arch' parameter, as this will avoid a
build failure when that variable is unused in the callers. That happens
when building on unsupported architectures, the ones without
HAVE_PERF_REGS_SUPPORT defined.

AMD IBS can do per-process profiling[1] and is no longer restricted to
per-cpu or systemwide only. Remove stale error message. Also, checking
just exclude_kernel is not sufficient since IBS does not support any
privilege filters. So include all exclude_* checks. And finally, move
these checks under tools/perf/arch/x86/ from generic code.
Before:
$ sudo ./perf record -e ibs_op//k -C 0
Error:
AMD IBS may only be available in system-wide/per-cpu mode. Try
using -a, or -C and workload affinity
After:
$ sudo ./perf record -e ibs_op//k -C 0
Error:
AMD IBS doesn't support privilege filtering. Try again without
the privilege modifiers (like 'k') at the end.

It is often useful to know not just the attribute and perf_event_open()
details when opening an evsel, but also the evsel's name. Add this debug
output for verbose 3 so that it won't interfere with the current verbose
2 output.

perf tools fixes for v6.4: 2nd batch
- Fix BPF CO-RE naming convention for checking the availability of fields on
'union perf_mem_data_src' on the running kernel.
- Remove the use of llvm-strip on BPF skel object files, not needed, fixes a
build breakage when the llvm package, that contains it in most distros, isn't
installed.
- Fix tools that use both evsel->{bpf_counter_list,bpf_filters}, removing them from a
union.
- Remove extra "--" from the 'perf ftrace latency' --use-nsec option,
previously it was working only when using the '-n' alternative.
- Don't stop building when both binutils-devel and a C++ compiler isn't
available to compile the alternative C++ demangle support code, disable that
feature instead.
- Sync the linux/in.h and coresight-pmu.h header copies with the kernel sources.
- Fix relative include path to cs-etm.h.

Previously the evsel__group_pmu_name would iterate the evsel's group,
however, the list of evsels aren't yet sorted and so the loop may
terminate prematurely. It is also not desirable to iterate the list of
evsels during list_sort as the list may be broken.
Precompute the group_pmu_name for the evsel before sorting, as part of
the computation and only if necessary, iterate the whole list looking
for group members so that being sorted isn't necessary.
Move the group pmu name computation to parse-events.c given the closer
dependency on the behavior of
parse_events__sort_events_and_fix_groups.

perf_pmus__has_hybrid was used to detect when there was >1 core PMU,
this can be achieved with perf_pmus__num_core_pmus that doesn't depend
upon is_pmu_hybrid and PMU name comparisons. When modifying the
function calls take the opportunity to improve comments,
enable/simplify tests that were previously failing for hybrid but now
pass and to simplify generic code.

__evlist__add_default adds a cycles event to a typically empty evlist
and was extended for hybrid with evlist__add_default_hybrid, as more
than 1 PMU was necessary. Rather than have dedicated logic for the
cycles event, this change switches to parsing 'cycles:P' which will
handle wildcarding the PMUs appropriately for hybrid.

The behaviour of handling cpu maps varies for core and other PMUs. For
core PMUs the cpu map lists all valid CPUs, whereas for other PMUs the
map is the default CPU. Add a flag in the evsel to indicate if a PMU
is core to help with later interpreting of the cpu maps and populate
it when the evsel is created during parsing. When propagating cpu
maps, core PMUs should intersect the cpu map of the PMU with the user
requested one.

error prone.

If we have a group of {cycles,faults} then we need the faults software
event to appear to be on the same PMU as cycles so that we don't split
the group in parse_events__sort_events_and_fix_groups.
This case is relatively easy as cycles is the leader and will have a PMU
name. In the reverse case, {faults,cycles} we still need faults to
appear to have the PMU name of cycles but the old behavior is just to
return "cpu".
For hybrid this fails as cycles will be on "cpu_core" or "cpu_atom",
causing faults to be split into a different group.
Change the behavior for software events so that the whole group is
searched for the named PMU.

'perf stat' with no arguments will use default events and metrics. These
events may fail to open even with kernel and hypervisor disabled. When
these fail then the permissions error appears even though they were
implicitly selected. This is particularly a problem with the automatic
selection of the TopdownL1 metric group on certain architectures like
Skylake:

Consider adjusting /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_paranoid setting to open
access to performance monitoring and observability operations for processes

Do defensive programming by using zfree() to initialize freed pointers
to NULL, so that eventual use after free result in a NULL pointer deref
instead of more subtle behaviour.
Also remove one NULL test before free(), as it accepts a NULL arg and we
get one line shaved not doing it explicitely.

container:

Use --filter option to set BPF filter for generic events other than the
tracepoints or Intel PT. The BPF program will check the sample data and
filter according to the expression.
For example, the below is the typical perf record for frequency mode.
The sample period started from 1 and increased gradually.
